Millbay - Plymouth

Home » Case Studies » Residential » Millbay – Plymouth

Set in the historic naval town of Plymouth, the transformation of Millbay is a key element in the Council’s vision to make City one of Europe’s most vibrant waterfront locations. Millbay Marina Village is situated at the southern end of Millbay overlooking Plymouth Sound, approximately one mile from the City Centre.

Full planning permission has been secured by Walsingham Planning for a breath-taking new building designed around the character of a ship completing a 26-year project to regenerate a run-down stretch of the City’s waterfront.

The dramatic landmark building, held up by a series of curved steel ‘ribs’ and containing luxury apartments, is the centrepiece of plans to revitalise the Millbay Marina area and transform it into a new residential village.

Walsingham Planning was instructed to provide planning advice in relation to the proposals and were also tasked with the preparation and submission of the planning application. The application site was highly constrained and required a number of competing constraints to be balanced and addressed including flood risk, marine ecology, the potential for unexploded ordnance and landscape and visual impact. Walsingham Planning coordinated the Environmental Statement which supported the proposals.

The proposals also required a Marine Management Organisation Order (MMO) to construct the development as some of the proposed apartments are located on a pier stretching out into the sea. Walsingham Planning prepared and submitted the MMO Order, which was granted in tandem with the planning consent.
